HORSE RACING

Horse racing is a big and expensive industry.  There are flat races which are just racing round the track and there are steeplechases which are over jumps.  Some of the most famous races are the Grand National and the Kentucky Derby.  Red Rum was a racehorse who won the Grand National 3 times and came second twice.  He won the first  twotimes he ran then came second the next two times and then won the final time.  He was the first horse to ever achieve this.   Desert Orchid was a famous steeplechaser who won almost all the major steeplechases during his racing career.

    WESTERN RIDING

Western riding is very different from English riding.   The gaits have different names and are called walk, jog, and lope instead of walk, trot, and canter.  People ride western mainly in ranches, rodeos and on some riding holidays.  On ranches the horses are used for rides, herding cows etc.  To stop the horse the reins are dropped on its neck which is completly different to english riding.
